Rhythm Village Festival

Midsummer, 2018. Vauxhall, London.
Rhythm Village will be a community festival of movement and creative celebration, set in St Peter's Church and other Vauxhall venues. You are invited to come and move - to dance, to enjoy music, food and art. To hang out, drink tea, meet new people. We will dance, we will probably laugh, we might cry and hopefully we will learn something about ourselves and what it means to be in a human body and in urban community.

Keep reading to check out the programme...

St Peter's Church, Tyers Street, Vauxhall, SE11 5HY

All Are Welcome!

A few things that will be ongoing during the ten days:

Collaborative Community Art Piece
@St Peter’s
with Morag Donnelly, Virag Kiss & dancingTao / AIM support

During the whole festival, there will be an invitation to come and make a simple contribution to a piece of collective art.

Various Festival Cafés will be open at different times:
The Teahouse Theatre, Vauxhall City Farm Café, Caffe Italia

And more to be announced...

A few points of information:

What to bring for movement events:
- loose comfortable clothes (and a change if you have a tendency to sweat)
- a re-usable water bottle (clean tap water will be available at all sessions)

Children
- are welcome at any event labelled as all welcome, but need to be supervised by a participating adult, and able to be sensitive to the atmosphere of the moment (e.g. quiet moments)

Accessibility
- all events wheelchair accessible unless otherwise specified

A word about costs:
Open events are ticketed on a sliding scale of cost according to means.
Events specific to particular communities or groups are by suggested donation.
Ticket revenues and a grant from Erasmus+ will subsidise the running of the lower-resourced community events.
To be completely honest, we're on a shoe-string, so extra donations welcome!

Opening Ceremony: Sweaty Thursday

5Rhythms Introduction & Rhythm Village Opening Ceremony
with Christian de Sousa & dancingTao support
@ St Peter’s Church, Tyers Street, Vauxhall, SE11 5HY

As part of London Arts & Health week, we open the festival with a ‘back to basics' introductory 5Rhythms class. We’ll also do a simple movement-based ritual to open the festival.

The 5Rhythms are a simple map to finding the natural movement of the body in any given moment. Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness each invite us to move in different ways. Moving through them in sequence takes us through a Wave, which allows us to align with the natural and diverse movement of energy in any given moment. The 5Rhythms can be danced by anyone with a physical body, whatever age, shape, colour, ability, sexual orientation or gender.

All welcome
No previous experience required, just come along!

Cost £16-£13-£11-£9 according to means or free to wristband-holders.
(no adv booking except via festival wristbands)

fluid q  explores and celebrates gender and sexual fluidity through Open Floor improvisational movement.

Recognising at times we feel outcasts in our own body, fluid q  offers a complementary art space - inviting possibilities of moving freely between dance and art. Sometimes the most creative space may be the art table. Whether through dance or art we may find avenues to be present to anything and everything: loving, losing, colliding, creating, connecting, feeling. Transcending static notions of identity, fluid q  is an invitation to creatively explore living between and beyond; to find new ways of being.

Every Body Welcome
Initially invited to create an LGBTQ+ focused class, fluid  q particularly welcomes those who don't feel they tick the boxes.

A Deeper Acceptance: Moving with Chronic Illness

A 5Rhythms movement meditation workshop
with Richard Wiltshire + AIM / dancingTao support
@St Peter’s Church, Tyers Street, Vauxhall, SE11 5HY

This 5Rhythms movement meditation session is an opportunity for those who suffer from chronic illness and chronic pain to move with like-bodied souls where there will be no potential for self imposed expectation or comparison of moving like 'regular' dancers.

In this session we will search out new ways to move with our illness. Dancers will be invited to move with all that chronic illness can bring such as frustration, pain and powerlessness.   By exploring the 5Rhythms together in this way we will have the opportunity to alchemise these challenges into new creative ways of being. Chairs will be provided for the group.

This session is for anyone who suffers from chronic illness or chronic pain.
Some experience of the 5Rhythms would be helpful but is absolutely not required.

Suggested Donation £15-£5 or whatever is affordable

Dancing on the Bridges - All In Movement presents...

Breaking down the Barriers: from Berlin to Budapest via Roma and Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. Using movement to explore meeting across difference and mapping pathways of social inclusion
with All In Movement partners + dancingTao support

Over recent months, a team from dancingTao CIC has been leading a project exploring movement practice and social inclusion, working with partners from Budapest, Rome and Berlin. Called All In Movement, the project is funded by Erasmus Plus as an foundational exploration of how movement practice can both be used to support social inclusion - and how movement communities can be more inclusive. Rhythm Village is one of the public offerings of the 9-month project

Tonight the teams will present a 2-part evening sharing from this project. In the cosy, discursive space of the Tea House Theatre, there will be short sharings of work done in these cities during and prior to the project, followed by a discussion. Then we will stroll over to St Peter’s Church and continue the exploration on the dancefloor, ending with a 5Rhythms wave.

How a human body of 70% fluid holds itself up against gravity helps us to understand the support of musculoskeletal system. Knowing this helps a dancer to protect themselves from the common injuries that occur. Come along to be delighted with the amazing design of the human musculoskeletal system that allows us to enjoy the dance. With this awareness, advice will be given for basic stretches so be ready to lie on the floor. And tools will be given to help understand what’s important to know on how to keep ourselves upright and strong so we can not only totally embody the dance but also dance happily into old age.

Soul to Soul

with Morag Donnelly & Christa Coccione + AIM / dancingTao support
@St Peter's Church, Tyers Street, Vauxhall, SE11 5HY

The depth at which we can meet each other on the dancefloor has the potential to invigorate, bringing a vitality of being met and seen. It can also evoke the opposite or ignite  a longing for more connection: on and perhaps off the dance floor.

This workshop will be a safe and respectfully guided space to drop in to your senses and open this enquiry into dancefloor relationship. We will be exploring how we navigate what arises in the dance and the mysterious chemistry of these connections. Through experiential investigation and discussion, we will explore themes such as being seen, permission to let go and sharpening our felt sense. In doing so, we will strengthen our awareness of boundaries, that like our bodies are constantly in flux, and learn to dance with them.

All welcome.
This workshop is primarily for dancers with prior experience of 5Rhythms or other forms of conscious movement

Planting the Dream-Seeds

with Amy Birtles + AIM / dancingTao support
@Vauxhall Allotments (see website for location)

Dancing often seems to bring moments of joy, insight and inspiration. Sometimes these are quite transient experiences; sometimes they become a seed of change, a new dream or other growth. Planting and growing actual seeds in the earth can be a way to remember and nourish these ‘dream-seeds’.

Amy, a dancing gardener and permaculturist who tends to the Vauxhall community allotments, will lead us in a simple ‘dream-seed’ planting ritual. Locals and regular visitors to Vauxhall will then be able to watch the seeds (hopefully!) grow into plants as the summer develops.

A music-led session of deep dancing
with Christian de Sousa, dancingTao Live Band & Soul System and AIM Erasmus crew

For this evening only, we'll have a very special constellation of musicians playing a live journey for the dancefloor, followed by Christian playing a Waves-based 3-hour DJ set. Using music and minimal facilitation, we will invite all comers to join body and breath to rhythm, dive deep and join together in a dancing celebration of life, music and community.

A Movement Medicine Prayer Ceremony
with Christian de Sousa, Cyrill Chanterau & Tamara Candiracci + MM support

St Peter’s Church, Tyers Street, Vauxhall, SE11 5HY

This Movement Medicine dance will be a safe, strong and gentle space for using movement as a resource for expressing gratitude and seeking sacred communion with the spirit. How does that work? Simply moving our bodies with awareness of the heart and what we are connected to, what we hold love for - that is a dancing prayer.

We will dance prayers for ourselves and our dreams; we dance for others we are connected to; our families, our communities and the world situation; for the generations who came before and those who will inherit the future; and for the well-being of all and the unified whole.

All Welcome.
Some previous experience of conscious movement preferable but not essential

Hope: a Time-based Performance

by Somebody
@St Peter's Church

Hope is about addressing the need to re-invent ourselves amid a world of crises and above all exploring and finding possibilities how to face them with a positive attitude of “hope”.  Mummification is a symbolic process where anybody can experience in different moment in  life every individual of any colour, gender,  any size, and passport does not come in to….above all It is  a process of purification where the human race if we wish to last needs seriously  re-think and act practically their very existence. In brief perhaps I wish to say that we are not living in a harmonious world however a hope is there if we all really wish we can reverse a bleak destiny already here.
